Donald Patrick McDonald (Service No 1783) was born in Lithgow, N.S.W. around 1892.

At enlistment he was 23 years old, single, worked as a miner and lived in Clifton, N.S.W. Donald listed his sister as his next of kin but at some time during the next month he listed his wife Violet as his next of kin.

Donald embarked on HMAT A9 Shropshire with the 13th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 17th March 1915. He arrived in Gallipoli, Turkey, in late May 1915.

On 15th September 1915, Donald was wounded and evacuated to hospital with a gun shot wound to his right leg. He returned to his unit on 15th October 1915. Donald is listed as wounded with a serious scalp wound in early January 1916.

On 7th April 1916 he was transferred to the 4th Machine Gun Company and he went to France with them, arriving on 9th June 1916. Donald saw service on the Western Front and on 31st January 1918, he was admitted to hospital for treatment from the effects of a mustard gas attack. On 8th August 1918, Donald was wounded again and was treated for shrapnel wounds to his back and buttocks. He returned to duty on 27th September 1918.

On 18th December 1918, Donald was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged on 1st July 1919.
