Herbert Smith (Service no 9969) was born in Bulli, NSW.

On 18 June 1906,  Herbert married Edith Wearn in Wollongong, NSW and together they had 9 children.

At the time of enlistment, Herbert was married, 29 years of age, employed as a miner and resided in Bulli, NSW.   Herbert left a pregnant Edith and their 6 children when he embarked on HMATA 35  - Berrima with the Field Artillery Brigade 1, 13th Reinforcements on 17 December 1915.

After arriving in Egypt, Herbert was posted to No 3 section on 24th January 1916 and after arriving in France on 2 April 1916 he was transferred to No 2 section as a driver.  Herbert saw service on the Western Front.   He returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged on 29 July 1919.

Herbert died in Sydney in 1955 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, NSW.
