Alexander Gordon Braithwaite
Alexander Gordon Braithwaite (Service No 2039) was born in Nowra, N.S.W., around 1891.
At enlistment he was single, 25 years old and worked as a clerk. Alexander embarked on HMAT A68 Anchises, with the 35th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement, on 24th August 1916. He arrived in England on 11th October 1916, and joined the 35th Battalion in France, on 21st November 1916. Alexander saw service on the Western Front and was wounded in action at Messines, Belgium, on 7th June 1917. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his left hand and leg. Alexander returned to duty on 22nd September 1917, and found his brother, Ishmael Braithwaite (Service No 7195), had joined his unit and was serving with him.
On 12th October 1917, Alexander was wounded in action a second time, at Passchendaele, Belgium, in the same action that saw his brother killed. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm. Alexander retuned to duty on 13th December 1917. He was wounded a third time on 11th August 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his jaw. Alexander's active service was over and he was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged on 19th May 1919.
In 1921, he married Clara Davidson but the marriage failed and they were divorced in 1929.
Alexander died in 1964 and is buried in Nowra Cemetery, Nowra, N.S.W.
