Robert Standen (Service no 5228) was born in Helensburgh, NSW in 1897.

At the time of enlistment Robert was single, 18 years of age, employed as a labourer and had previously served 4 years with the Cadets.  He was the last to enlist and youngest of 4 brothers who all served.

Two of Robert's brothers saw service with the Navy, George Allen (Service no 118) and William Thomas (Service no 1204), and another, Roderick Edwin (Service no 12/449), served with the New Zealand Army.

Robert embarked on SS Makarini with the 3rd Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1 April 1916.  He arrived in Egypt on 2 May 1916 and after arriving in France on 22 May was transferred to 55th Battalion on 24 May 1916.   Robert saw service on the Western Front.

Robert returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 4 September 1919. 

In 1925, he married Margaret McAuliffe in Wagga, NSW and together they raised 3 children. 

Robert died in Sydney, NSW in 1948 and is buried in Frenches Forrest Cemetery.
