William Martin (Service no 898) was born in Kent, England in1887.

At the time of enlistment William was single, 27 years of age, employed as a labourer and resided in Helensburgh, NSW.

He embarked on HMAT A19 - Afric with 1st Battalion, G Company on 18 October 1914. He arrived in Egypt in December 1914 and was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey.

William was wounded in action on 19 May 1915 during the Turkish attack on the ANZAC's.  He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a bullet wound to his head.  William was repatriated to Australia in January 1916 and medically discharged on 15 April 1916.

William died in 1964 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
