John Mitchell was born in Parkes, N.S.W. and was known by the name Jack.

At enlistment Jack was single, 21 years old and employed as a school teacher at Corrimal Public School, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A60 Aeneas with Howitzer Brigade 116 on 30th September 1916.

He arrived in England on 19th November 1916 and joined his unit in France on 5th February 1917.  Jack saw service on the Western Front with no major events recorded.  He was returned to Australia in March 1919.

On 28th June 1922 Jack married Margaret Donaldson and the couple had 4 children.  Jack died in Bankstown Hospital, Sydney in 1968.

Jack's service is commemorated on the Corrimal Public school Roll of Honour.
