Andrew Wallace Shearer
Andrew Shearer (Service No 1497), was born in Avondale, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was 23 years old and worked as a grazier.
In 1916, Andrew married Ethel Christie, in Parramatta, N.S.W.
He embarked on HMAT A74 Marathon, with the 33rd Battalion Machine Gun Section, on 4th May 1916. Andrew arrived in England on 9th July 1916, joining 33rd Battalion Machine Gun Section, A Company, in France, on 21st October 1916. On 28th January 1917, he was wounded in action. Andrew was treated for abrasions to his knee, and was back on duty on 8th February. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 19th June 1917.
Andrew was wounded a second time at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 12th October 1917. He was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of gun shot wounds to his right arm and shoulder. Andrew was repatriated to Australia in May 1918, and after further treatment, he was discharged medically unfit on 6th November 1918.
Andrew and Ethel had one child.
Andrew died in Moree, N.S.W., in 1982, and is buried in Collarenabri Cemetery, Collarenabri, N.S.W.
