Walter Herbert Hepper
Walter Herbert Hepper (Service No 3161), was born in Bowning, N.S.W., in 1895.
At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, worked as a clerk and lived in Harden, N.S.W. Walter listed his father, John, from Wollongong, N.S.W., as his next of kin.
Walter embarked on HMAT A72 Beltana, with 45th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement, on 25th November 1916. He arrived in England on 29th January 1917, and joined 45th Battalion in France, on 1st April 1917. Walter saw service on the Western Front until 1st October 1917, when he was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital, for treatment of a gun shot wound to the head, returning to duty on 22nd January 1918. Walter was promoted to Lance Corporal on 30th August 1918. He returned to Australia in July 1919, and was discharged on 28th September 1919.
In 1922, Walter married Lillian Chittick, and the couple raised 8 children.
On 2nd June 1962, Walter married Nina Robson.
Walter died in 1983, and is buried in Northern Suburbs Cemetery.
Walter's brother, Joseph (Service No 3781), also served.
