Sydney Wales/Walter McConnell
Sidney Wales McConnell (Service no 321) was born in Kent, England and emmigrated to Australia.
At the time of enlistment, Sidney was single, 27 years of age, employed as a labourer, resided in Port Kembla, NSW and had previously served 3 years with the British Military.
He embarked on HMAT A23 - Suffolk with the 2nd Battalion, C Company on 18 October 1914 and arrived in Egypt in December 1914. Sidney was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April 1914 where he was wounded in action. Sidney was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his hand.
Sidney saw service in Egypt until September 1916 when he was posted to England where he served for the rest of the War.
Sidney was returned to Australia in February 1918 and medically discharged due to his hand and other conditions on 17 May 1918.
Sidney enlisted in WW2 and served as Sergeant McConnell (Service no N104279) with 13th Garrison Battalion from 26 January 1941 until 27 October 1943. He enlisted from Port Kembla, NSW and listed Ethel Gabriel as next of kin.
