Charles Burley (Service No 9834) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.

At enlistment, Charles was single, 24 years old and worked as a  bricklayer.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A31 Ajana with 9th Field Company Engineers on 5th July 1916.

He arrived in England on 31st August 1916 but was admitted to hospital soon after, on 11th September 1916.  He had contracted spinal meningitis and was seriously ill for some time.

He was repatriated to Australia in May 1917 and discharged medically unfit with a pension on 9th August 1917.

On 9th February 1918 he married Eleanor Steer in Victoria.

Charles died in Concord Hospital in 1968.

His brother Jonathan Burley (Service No 7474) also served.
