Samuel McGowan (Service No 6288), was born in Lanark, Scotland.

At enlistment, in Kiama, N.S.W., he was single, 19 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Thirroul, N.S.W.

Samuel embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides, with 13th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement, on 9th September 1916. He arrived in England on 26th October 1916, and joined 13th Battalion in France, on 24th March 1917. Samuel took part in the Battle of Bullecourt, and was listed as missing, on 11th April 1917. Like so many of 13th Battalion, he had been taken prisoner, and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp, in Limberg, Germany. Samuel was repatriated to England, on 15th December 1918. He was returned to Australia, in April 1919, and discharged on 9th July 1919.

In 1927, Samuel married Catherine Chamberlain and they had 6 children.

Samuel died in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1959.
