Charles Kelly (Service No 4220) was born in Bega, NSW.

At the time of enlistment he was single, 27 years of age, employed as a shunter and lived in Wollongong, NSW.

Charles embarked on HMAT A60 - Aeneas with 3rd Battalion, 13th Reinforcements on 20 December 1915.  He arrived in France on 28 March 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.

Charles fought at Pozieres where he was wounded in action on 23 July 1916.  He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm but returned to duty on 29 September 1916. 

 Charles was promoted to Lance Corporal on 26 October 1917.  Charles was wounded on 9 April 1917 and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right arm.

Charles was deemed unfit for further active service and repatriated to Australia in August 1917.  He was discharged as medically unfit in the 2nd Military District on 30 October 1917.

On 15 December 1917, he married Matilda Northfield and together they had 3 children.

Charles died in 1949 and is buried in Woronora Cemetery.
