Ernest Foster (Service No 72) was born in Sydney around 1886.

At enlistment Ernest was single, 30 years old, worked as a locomotive driver and lived at Helensburgh, N.S.W.  Ernest nominated his mother, Sarah, who also lived at Helensburth, as his next of kin.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire holding the rank of Second Corporal with Section 1 on 7th February 1917.

He arrived in England on 11th April 1917 and was sent to France soon after on 14th May 1917 where he joined the 6th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company.

Ernest saw service on the Western Front until the war ended, when he was granted leave.  He gained employment with the North Eastern Train Company in York, England, from 4th June 1919 until 4th September 1919 to gain experience in electric train driving.

Ernest returned to Australia in October 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 21st December 1919.
