William Bassett (Service No 58539) was born in Adelong, N.S.W.  He married Elma Toose in Mosman in 1912.

Although he was married with 2 children, when William enlisted he stated he was single.  He was 35 years old and worked as a labourer, and nominated his father, George, of Figtree, N.S.W., as his next of kin.   

William embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with N.S.W. General Reinforcements on 19th June 1918.

He arrived in England on 26th August 1918 and joined 14th Artillery in France, after the war ended on 28th November 1918.

William returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 19th September 1919.

He was living in Queensland in 1935 and died at Inverell in 1950.
