John William Madgwick (Service No 5736), was born in Parramatta, N.S.W., in 1886.

At enlistment, he was single, 28 years old, worked as a labourer and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W.

John embarked on HMAT A55 Kyarra, with 4th Battalion, 18th Reinforcement, on 13th June 1916, arriving in England, on 3rd August.

He joined 4th Battalion in France, on 23rd September 1916, and saw service on the Western Front until early 1917. John was admitted to hospital with illness, and repatriated to Australia, in April 1917. He was discharged medically unfit, on 6th September 1917.

In 1917, John married Gertrude Eades and they had 2 children.

John died on 27th January 1957.

His brother, Reginald Madgwick (Service No 5162), also served.
