William Riordan (Service No 5890) was born in Camden, N.S.W.

At enlistment William was single, 23 years old, worked as a shunter and lived at Bellambi, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 17th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 7th October 1916 and arrived in England on 21st November.  He joined the 17th battalion in France on 19th March 1917.

William was admitted to hospital sick suffering from trench fever on 17th July 1917 and returned to duty on 27th October 1917.

He saw service on the Western Front until wounded in action on 31st August 1918. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe bullet wound to his right foot.

In December 1918 William was returned to Australia and discharged from the AIF on 11th May 1919.

In 1923 he married Elizabeth Griffin in Sydney and they raised 6 children.

William died in 1985 and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery.
