Joseph Vincent Hawke (Service No 3824) was born in Hillgrove, N.S.W., in 1894.

At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, worked as a surveyors assistant, lived in Thirroul. N.S.W., and had served in the Cadets and Militia.

 Joseph embarked on HMAT A68 Anchises, with 30th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement, on 24th August 1916. He arrived in England on 11th October 1916, and joined 30th Battalion in France, on 23rd December 1916. Joseph saw service on the Western Front and has no wounding recorded, though he was admitted to hospital with a twisted knee.

On 13th November 1918, he was detached to 2nd Division HQ. He was returned to Australia in November 1919, and discharged on 30th January 1920.

In 1921 he married Elsie Hood, in Wollongong, N.S.W.

Joseph died on 26th September 1975.
