Alfred Gumbleton (Service No 15297) was born in Stockinbingal, N.S.W.  He married Lillian Fairhall in Thirroul, N.S.W. on 8th February 1913.

At enlistment Alfred was 30 years old, worked as a labourer.  He and Lillian had two children and family lived at Thirroul.  He embarked on HMAT A30 Borda on 6th January 1918.  Alfred arrived in England on 4th March 1918 and joined 3rd Machine Gun Company in France on 2nd April 1918.

He saw service on the Western Front until the end of the war.

On 27th January 1919 he was admitted to hospital for treatment of a fractured shoulder.  He was invalided home on 31st March 1919 and discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 8th June 1919.

He and Lillian went on to have a third child.

Alfred died in Gosford, N.S.W. in 1963.

Alfred's service is commemorated at the Thirroul-Woodward Memorial Park.
