Alexander Mathers (Service N 152) was born in Manchester, England in July 1887 and arrived in Australia in May 1913.

At enlistment Alexander was single, 27 years old, employed as a labourer, and lived in Austinmer, NSW.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with 3rd Battalion, A Company on 19th October 1914.  The troops arrived in Egypt and after training Alexander was sent to Gallipoli. He landed on 25th April 1915 and was wounded in action that day and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his leg.

Alexander returned to Gallipoli on 4th August and took part in the Lone Pine battle.

On 19th September 1915 he was sent to hospital on Mudros sick.

He arrived in France on 28th March 1916 and served at Pozieres. On 18th August 1916 Alexender was wounded a second time but the injury is not recorded.

On 8th October 1916 he was transferred to 54th Battalion in France.  Alexander was wounded a third time, on 24th October 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a shell wound to his left hand.  He did not return to his unit until 8th June 1918.

On 11th August 1918 he was admitted to hospital sick.

In October 1918 Alexander was returned to Australia for Special 1914 Leave and discharged on 25th February 1919.

In 1920 Alexander married Lillian Gunther in Hurstville in Sydney and the couple had 2 children.

Alexander died in 1966.  His service is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial.
