Fred Kershaw (Service No 3626) was born in Oldham, England and arrived in Sydney in August 1915 where he joined his sister, Esther Comac, in Corrimal, N.S.W.

At enlistment Fred was single, 23 years of age, worked as a fitter and lived at Towradgi, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A69 Warialda with Tunnel Company No 4, Headquarters 1 on 22nd May 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 18th July 1916 and Fred was sent on to France soon after.  He joined 1st Tunnelling Company on 30th September 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.

Fred was returned to Australia in September 1919 and discharged from AIF on 9th January 1920.

He died suddenly at his home in Wollongong on the day before his birthday in 1942, and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery.
