Charles Hansen (Service No 2651) was born in Narranderra, NSW but the family moved to the Illawarra, NSW soon after.

At the time of enlistment in Wollongong, Charles was single, 18 years of age and employed as a motor mechanic in Port Kembla, NSW. Charles had also served with the Army Cadets.

Charles embarked on the HMAT A40 - Ceramic with the 45th Battalion, 6th Reinforcements on 7 October 1916. He arrived in England on 21 November 1916 and joined the 45th Battalion in Belgium where he took part in the Messines Battles.

Charles saw service on the Western Front with 45th Battalion. Charles returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 22 September 1919.

Charles married Fanny Montgomery in Corrimal, NSW on 14 January 1922 and together they raised 7 children.

Charles died in 1965 and is buried in the Memorial Gardens at Unanderra, NSW.
