Albert Callaghan (Service No 2679) was born in Carnarvonshire, Wales around 1877.

At enlistment Albert was 39 years old, a widower, worked as a miner, lived at Thirroul, NSW, and had served 8 years with the Navy.  Albert nominated his mother-in-law, Mrs Tolmie, in Wales, UK, as his next of kin.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A24 Benalla with 37th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 9th November 1916 and arrived in England on 9th January 1917.

Albert arrived in France on 8th May 1917 and saw service on the Western Front until, on 26th July 1917, he was sent to hospital suffering from influenza.  He was subsequently returned to England for treatment on 8th August 1917.  

Albert remained in England, and on 4th September 1918 married Elizabeth Grigg in Wiltshire.

He was returned to Australia with his wife in November 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 20th February 1920.  Albert and Elizabeth had 3 children.

Albert died in 1963 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, NSW.
