Desmond Brereton Fitzgerald
Desmond Fitzgerald (Service No 20) was born in Sydney in 1892.
At enlistment Desmond was single, 22 years old, employed as a station overseer and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. where his father was employed as the District Engineer.
Desmond embarked from Sydney on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria with 1st Light Horse Regment, Headquarters, as a signaller. After he arrived in Egypt Desmond was ordered to to remain in camp, but no reason is given for this order on his papers.
He was returned to Australia in July 1915 and discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 21st December 1915. Desmond was granted a War Pension in February 1916.
In 1925 he married Heather Linsley and had one child.
Desmond died in 1928 and is buried in Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, N.S.W.
