Alan Reid (service No 5640), was born in Hamilton, Scotland.

At enlistment he was 28 years old, worked as a musician and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W.

In 1916, he married Catherine Todd, at Redfern, N.S.W., and was a well known entertainer in the local area.

Alan embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides, with 20th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement, on 9th September 1916. He arrived in England on 26th October 1916, and joined 20th Battalion in France, on 1st August 1917. Alan saw service on the Western Front, but was sent to hospital, on 1st August 1918, with dysentery. His health did not improve and he was returned to Australia in January 1919.

Alan was discharged medically unfit, on 30th June 1919.
