William Organ
William Organ (Service No 320) was born in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1881.
On 15th January 1908, he married Edith Reeves in Dapto, N.S.W., and when he enlisted they had 2 children, a third child was born after he came home.
At enlistment William was 35 years old, worked as a cabinet maker, lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. and had served 3 years with the Australian Garrison Artillery. He stated that he was 32 years old, at enlistment.
William embarked on HMAT A73 Commonwealth, from Melbourne, VIC, with Machine Gun Company, 93rd Reinforcement, on 19th September 1916. He arrived in England on 14th November 1916, joining 22nd Machine Gun Company, in France, on 17th March 1917. He saw service on the Western Front and while not wounded, his health suffered. William had a number of admissions to hospital and was repatriated to Australia, in December 1918.
He was discharged medically unfit with Effort Syndrome, on 4th October 1919, after receiving more hospital treatment in Australia.
After the war, William served many years as the First Aid Officer at the Mount Keira Colliery, Mt Keira, N.S.W.
William died in Wollongong in 1944, and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery.
