John Ellis (Service No 3041) was born in Aalborg, Denmark and arrived in Australia about 1890.  John became an Australian citizen to enlist and was naturalised while he was in an Army camp in 1915.

At enlistment, John was 44 years old, married, worked as a cook, and lived at Thirroul, N.S.W.

John embarked from Sydney on HMAT A69 Warialda with 2nd Battalion, 10th Reinforcements on 8th October 1915.

The first entry of service, dated 5th February 1916, records that he joined 2nd Battalion in Egypt, so it is unclear just where John was before this.

He was transferred to 54th Battalion on 14th February and arrived in France with them on 29th June 1916.  John was admitted to hospital in France on 18th July 1916 and sent to England on 20th July for treatment of enteritis, missing the battle for Fromelles. He was discharged from hospital on 12th November 1916 and returned to Australia in late December 1916.

He was discharged medically unfit on 2nd March 1917.
