James Giffen ( Service No 3051), was born in Leith, Scotland.

On 6th January 1903, he married Lilly Hall. James served 8 years, with 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry.

At enlistment, he stated he was 43 years, worked as a miner and lived in Bulli, N.S.W. He was actually 51 years old.

James embarked on HMAT A24 Benalla, with 36th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement, on 10th May 1917. He arrived in England on 10th July 1917, and was posted to 36th Battalion on 8th October 1917. James stayed in England and did not see active service.

He was returned to Australia in August 1919, and discharged medically unfit due to premature senility, on 14th December 1919.

James died in Wollongong, N.S.W., in 1934 and is buried at Bulli Cemetery, Bulli, N.SW.
