James O'Brien (Service No 4751) was born in Bathurst, N.S.W.

At enlistment James was 40 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived at Scarborough, N.S.W. James nominated a friend, M Telfer, also of Scarborough, as his next of kin.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 12th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion on 13th April 1916. He spent time in Egypt and England before he joined 20th Battalion in France on 14th May 1917.

James saw service on the Western Front and returned to Australia in May 1919. He was discharged on 19th August 1919.
