Private Walter Welsh (Service No 1307) was born in Bulli, NSW.

At the time of enlistment Walter was single, 19 years of age and employed as a miner from Bulli and had previously served 18 months in the Citizen Military Forces. He embarked on HMAT A40, Ceramic with 18th Battalion, D Company on 25th June 1915 for Egypt.

Walter was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey where he served from 16th August 1915 until the evacuation.

On 5th February 1916, Walter was admitted to hospital for treatment of varicose veins in his leg. The hospital was sited at a place called Mount Kembla.

On 20th April 1916 he was transferred to the 53rd Battalion, D Company. Walter was sent to the Western Front, arriving in France on 28th June 1916.

Walter was wounded in action while during the Battle of Fromelles on 19th July 1916 and was evacuated to hospital with shrapnel wounds to his left thigh and buttocks.

Walter was repatriated to Australia in May 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 20th October 1917.

In 1918 Walter married Ada Tolhurst in Bulli, NSW.

Walter died in 1978.
