Private John Thirlby (Service No 3706) was born in Leicester, England.

On 26th December 1912 he married Beatrice Hurley in Leicester and together they had a son who was born in early 1914. They were divorced in 1923.

At the time of enlistment, John was married, 27 years of age and employed as a labourer in Port Kembla, NSW.

John embarked on SS Port Darwin with the July 1917 Reinforcements of the Camel Corps on 30th April 1918. He arrived in Egypt on 7th June and was posted to 6th Light Horse Brigade.

John was returned to Australia in July 1919 and discharged in the 2nd Military District on 18th August 1919.

John returned to Wollongong, NSW and after his divorce married Hilda McDonald. They had 3 children together.

John died in Wollongong, NSW in 1952.
