Herbert Rauch (Service No 5211) was born in Wollongong, NSW and at the time of enlistment was single, 22 years of age and employed as a grocer's assistant.

Herbert joined the Waratah March and enlisted in Nowra, NSW.

Herbert embarked on SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1 April 1916 and arrived in Egypt on 2 May 1916. He was sent to France on 17 May 1916 where he joined the 1st Battalion, D Company on 27 July 1916.

Herbert saw service on the Western Front and was attached to the 1st ANZAC Corps Headquarters on 3 March 1917. He returned to the 1st Battalion on 19 July 1917.

Herbert was wounded in action on 17 September 1917 and admitted to hospital in France for treatment of multiple shrapnel wounds to his head and body. He returned to the Western Front on 15 November 1917.

Throughout his active service he was admitted to hospital a number of times.

Herbert returned to Australia in January 1919 and was medically discharged on 26 April 1919.

In 1921, he married Mary Boot and together they had 3 children. Herbert died in 1926.

His brother Henry Campbell Vivian Rauch AKA John Conlon (Service No 2146) was killed in action during the second battle for Villers-Bretonneau, France.
