Justinian Johns (Service No 6565) was born in Cornwall, England in April 1871.

He married Cassie Musgrave in Woonona, N.S.W. in 1897 and he and Cassie had 2 children and were living in Wollongong, N.S.W. when Justinian enlisted.

On his enlistment papers, Justinian stated he was 38 years old, married and worked as a Produce Manager.  He stated he had served 1 year with the Army Pay Corps and had been discharged due to excess staff.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 19th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 7th February 1917 and arrived in England on 11th April 1917.  He joined D Company, 20th Battalion in France on 25th October 1917 and served as a signaller on the Western Front.

Justinian was wounded in action on 25th May 1918 and was sent to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his chest [sternum].

He was returned to Australia in December 1918 and received further treatment in Australia.

Justinian was finally discharged on 13th August 1920 medically unfit with Tuberculosis.

He died in Prince of Wales Hospital in 1928 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
