Sidney Paine (Service No 1743) was born in Sydney around 1884.

At enlistment Sidney was single, 30 years old, worked as a butcher, and lived at Scarborough, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A61 Kanowna with 2nd Reinforcements, 19th Battalion on 19th June 1915.  After he arrived in Egypt he was sent on to Gallipoli where he arrived on 16th August 1915.  19th Battalion took part in the battle for Hill 60.  

On 15th September Sidney was admitted to hospital suffering from a hernia and this went on to cause problems for him throughout the war.  Sidney returned to his unit in Egypt on 13th January 1916 and went to France with the these troops, arriving there on 23rd March 1916.  

He was sent to hospital in France on 28th April 1916 due to his hernia and returned to duty on 1st August 1916.  On 9th January 1917 he was admitted to hospital with trench feet and returned to his unit on 25th February 1917.  

Sidney saw service on the Western Front until 6th November 1918 when he was sent to hospital in England, again due to his hernia.  Subsequently, Sidney was returned to Australia in December 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 20th April 1919.
