William Gwynne Northfield (Service No 1456) was born in Wollongong (N.S.W.) in 1891.

At the time of enlistment in Brisbane, (on the same day as his cousin John), William was a single 24 year old farmer with three years service in the Light Horse Militia.

William embarked on HMAT A47 Mashobra with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement on 4th October 1915.

After arriving in Egypt William was transferred to the 1st Machine Gun Squadron on 23 July 1915. He saw service in the Middle East and had a number of hospital admissions for various illnesses but was not wounded.

William returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 and was discharged on 27th August 1919.

In 1921 William married Ethel Maxwell in Lismore (N.S.W.) and raised five children. He died in Lismore (N.S.W.) in 1977.
