Charles Alfred Underwood (Service No 7156) was born in Port Kembla, N.S.W.

In 1915, he married Elizabeth McIntyre, and they had one child.

At enlistment, he was 27 years old, worked as an electrolytic worker, and lived in Port Kembla, N.S.W.

On 28th February 1918, Charles embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor, with 19th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement, arriving in England on 20th April 1918.

He was taken on strength of 19th Battalion, in France, on 25th August 1918, and served on the Western Front until the war ended.

In July 1919, he returned to Australia, as a Lance Corporal and was discharged on 4th October 1919.

Charles died in Wollongong, N.S.W., in 1960.
