John Davenport (Service No 6896)  was born in Macclesfield, England.

At enlistment John was single, 18 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Helensburgh, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A16 Port Melbourne with 20th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion, on 16th July 1917.  He arrived in England on 16th September 1917 and was sent on to France, arriving on 1st January 1918 to join the 20th battalion in France.

John saw service on the Western Front until he was wounded in action on 8th August 1918 while fighting at the battle for Amiens.  He was treated in hospital in France for a wound to his left knee and did not return to his unit until 13th November 1918 after the war had ended.

He returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 7th September 1919.

In 1922 he married Iris Parker in Wollongong and they had 6 children.

On 3rd November 1949, while riding a motor bike, John was killed in an accident on the Princes Highway & Princes Highway, Helensburgh, N.S.W.
