Garnet Mawbey (Service No 2954) was born in Gilgandra, N.S.W. the youngest child of John and Sarah Mawbey.  On 20th July 1900, when Garnet was only 4 years old, Sarah and 3 of her children were murdered on the family property.  This murder was the start of a killing spree by Jacky Underwood and Jimmy Governor and a huge story at the time.

At enlistment, Garnet was single, 19 years old, and worked as a farmer. Garnet nominated his father, John, who lived at Dapto, N.S.W. as his next of kin, however after John died, Garnet's next of kin was his brother Sidney who lived at Geurie, N.S.W.

Garnet embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A1 Hymettus with 21st Reinforcements, 7th Light Horse Regiment on 12th September 1916.  The troops arrived in Egypt on 17th October and Garnett joined 7th Light Horse Regiment on 30th October.  He arrived on Gallipoli on 27th November 1915 just as terrible storms were hitting the area.

Garnett was back in Egypt on 22nd January 1916 and saw service in Egypt and the Middle East, although he became ill a number of times and was admitted to hospital for treatments.

Garnett was returned to Australia in July 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 18th September 1919.

In 1924 he married Ivy Barker and together they had 5 children.

Garnett died in Dubbo in 1981.
