Joseph Hutchinson (Service No 3613) was born in Pontefract, England around 1873.

At enlistment Joseph was married, 43 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Corrimal, N.S.W.  He named his wife Betsy as his next of kin. Joseph had served 12 years in 47th regiment of the British Army before coming to Australia.

He embarked from Sydney with the rank of Corporal on HMAT A69 Warialda with Tunneling Company 4, Headquarets 1 on 22nd May 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 18th July 1916 and Joseph joined 1st Tunnelling Company in France on 25th September 1916.

Joseph was admitted to hospital a number of times and was finally repatriated to Australia in June 1917.

He was discharged medically unfit due to malaria on 23rd August 1917.
