John Joseph Roughan (Service No 4574) was born at Sandy Creek, Muswellbrook, N.S.W.

At enlistment John was single, 34 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived in Port Kembla.

John embarked on RMS Osterly with 2nd Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 15th January 1916. After initially arriving in Egypt, he went on to France, with 2nd Battalion, on 3rd April 1916.

John saw service briefly, on the Western Front, as he was wounded in action at Poziers, on 24th July 1916. He was evacuated to a hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left hand. John returned to Australia in October 1916, and was admitted to Randwick Military Hospital for more treatment. On 1st February 1917, he was found to be unfit for service and was medically discharged.

Prior to his death, John was a resident of the Brentwood Hospital for 3 years. John died in Brentwood Hospital, Muswellbrook, N.S.W. in 1944, aged 61 years.
