Charles Garnett (Service No 5023) was born in Bishop's Waltham, England. The 1911 census lists him in England as a law clerk.  

When Charles enlisted he was a single, 27 year old milk carter who was living at Thirroul, N.S.W. Charles had served 3 years 6 months in the British Territorials.

On 5th May 1917 he married Vera Parcell at Thirroul. He spent some time in Australia doing clerical work before he embarked from Sydney on HMAT A74 Marathon with 14th Reinforcements, 30th Battalion on 10th May 1917.

Charles arrived in England on 20th July 1917 and joined 36th Battalion in Belgium on 21st January 1918. On 19th April 1918 he was wounded in action and admitted to hospital for treatment. He saw service on the Western Front but spent a lot of time in hospital sick. On 10th December 1918 he was returned to Australia and discharged medically unfit with a ventral hernia.

In 1925 Charles returned to England and Vera divorced him in 1951, stating he had deserted her 26 years earlier. Charles died in Devon, England in 1954. His death certificate listed him as an Australian Army pensioner.
