Bernard Tier (Service No 1288) was born in Moruya, N.S.W.

 

From 17th March 1901 to November 1902 Bernard served as a Trooper with D Squadron, 3rd NSW Mounted Rifles in the Boer War (Service No 3349).

In 1905 he married Frances Geiger and the couple had 2 children.

At enlistment Bernard was 37 years old, worked as a carpenter, and lived at Paddington, in Sydney.  

He was promoted to Corporal on 12th December 1914 and to Staff Sergeant on 13th December 1914.  

Bernard finally embarked from Sydney on HMAT A39 Port Macquarie with Infantry Brigade Train 4, on 21st December 1914.

The troops arrived in Egypt and Bernard landed on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 where he served until returning to Egypt on 25th October 1915.

Attached to 7th Company, Australian Army Service Corpshe served in Egypt and was promoted to Warrent Officer on 27th May 1915.

Bernard was sent to France on 17th November 1916 and served on the Western Front and in England.

He returned to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged on 23rd April 1919.

Bernard settled in Wollongong,N.S.W. where he became a prominent figure in the community until he died from a stroke in 1938.
