On 18th December 1916 he joined the Battalion in France and saw service on the Western Front until 27th May 1917 when he was admitted to hospital with trench fever. He did not return to his unit until 23rd May 1918.

While in England John faced a number of charges for being absent without leave and the fact that he married Ada Edmonds in London after the war may have been the reason.  John and Ada married on 3rd December 1919 and returned to Australia in February 1920.  John was discharged on 7th April 1920.

The couple settled in Bulli and John returned to work at the mines.
