William Furner (Service No 5736) was born at Carcoar, N.S.W.

At enlistment, William was single, 32 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Balgownie, N.S.W.

He embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses with Tunnel Companies Reinforcements, on 25th October 1916. He arrived in England in December 1916 and joined 2nd Tunnelling Company in France on 8th February 1917.

William saw service on the Western Front and while not wounded he was admitted to hospital on 14th May 1918 with trench fever.  He did not recover from his illness and was invalided back to Australia in October 1918.

He was discharged medically unfit on 30th March 1919.

William died at Campsie, N.S.W in 1955.

His service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
