Albert Wakeman (Service No 3931) was born in Queensland and at the time of enlistment was a single 26 year old miner from Helensburgh.

Albert embarked on HMAT A7 Medic with 12th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion on 30th December, 1915. After arriving in Egypt he joined D Company, 3rd Battalion and went to France with them on 4th April, 1916.

Albert saw service on the Western Front and was wounded in action at Pozieres, receiving a severe gun shot wound to his right foot sometime between 22nd and 26th July, 1916. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment and returned to France on 15th January, 1917.

Albert was wounded a second time on 19th November, 1917 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a slight gun shot wound to his head. He returned to France on 25th April, 1918 and served until the end of the War.

On 10th February, 1919 Albert was promoted to Lance Corporal. He returned to Australia in April, 1919 and was discharged.

In 1926 Albert married Martha Way at Kurri Kurri and remained in the area until he died in 1948.

Albert's brother Sergeant William Wakeman (Service No 6329) served with 9th Battalion and was awarded the Military Medal.
