On 8th February 1916 John embarked on HMAT Ballarat and returned to Egypt where he joined 31st Battalion 1st April 1916.  31st Battalion spent time on garrison duties in Egypt before going on to France where they arrived on 23rd June 1916.

The 31st battalion saw service at Fromelles and suffered heavy casualties in that battle, John Lowe being one of those casualties.  On 20th July 1916, while engaged in the battle he was hit in the chest and seriously wounded.  John was lucky enough to have men close by who dragged him back to the battalion lines where he received medical treatment for a gun shot wound.  He was evacuated to England for treatment and in April 1917 he was returned to Australia.

He was discharged medically unfit on 17th July 1917.

John died in 1946.
