Hughie O'Neill (Service No 4587) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. around 1891.

At enlistment he was single, 26 years old, lived at Thirroul, N.S.W. and worked as a labourer.

After enlisting in Kiama, N.S.W. Hughie embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with 12th Reinforcements, 30th Battalion on 25th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 29th January 1917 and after training Hughie joined 30th Battalion in France on 11th June 1917.

On 28th September 1917 he was evacuated to England for treatment of trench fever. He returned to France on 17th April 1918.

Soon after he was evacuated to hospital in England after being gassed on 18th May 1918. 

Hughie was returned to Australia in July 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 2nd October 1919.

In 1919 he married Margaret Hume.
