Joseph Read (Service No 2417) was born in Maitland, N.S.W. around 1879.

At enlistment Joseph was single, 37 years of age, lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. and worked as a wharf labourer.  Joseph had served 8 years in the Militia.  He listed his sister, Mary Read, Wollongong Public School, as his next of kin.

Joseph embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A 68 Anchises with 4th Rreinforcements, 31st Battalion, on 14th March 1916.

The troops arrived in Egypt on 15th April 1916 and Joesph was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion on 8th May 1916.  He arrived in France on 29th May 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.

On 4th March 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from bronchitis.

He was returned to Australia in April 1918 with cronic bronchitis and discharged medically unfit on 9th October 1918.

Joseph died in 1947 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
