Alfred Knight (Service No 4561) was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England around 1887.

On 26th June 1909 he married Emily Watson in Leeds and they came to Australia with their child some time after 1909.

At enlistment Alfored 29 years old, and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. where he worked as a bricklayer.  Alfred had served 3 years with the 1st West Riding Brigade Yorkshire Artillery.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with 12th Reinforcements, 30th Battalion, on 25th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 3rd March 1917 and Alfred joined the 35th Battalion in France on 30th July 1917.

Alfred saw service on the Western Front until 31st August 1918 when he was wounded in action.  He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of scalp abrasions from a gun shot.

He was returned to Australia in December 1918 and underwent further treatment for his head wound. He was discharged medically unfit on 30th December 1919.
