William Smith (Service No 6096) was born in Rockhampton, Queensland around 1881.

At enlistment William was single, 35 years of age, worked as a labourer, and lived with his mother in Wentworth Street, Port Kembla, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 19th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, on 22nd August 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 13th October 1916 and William joined 3rd Battalion in France on 19th December 1916.  

William saw service on the Western Front until 6th May 1917 when he was wounded, receiving a gun shot wound to his left arm.  After being hospitalised for treatment he rejoined his unit on 29th May 1917 and served until the end of the war.

He was returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged.
