James Glover (Service No 3848) was born in Manchester, England.

At enlistment James was single, 27 years old, lived in Wollongong,  N.S.W., and worked as a railway worker.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A54 Runic with 9th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion, on 20th January 1916.  The troops arrived in Egypt on 26th February 1916 and James was sent on to France on 3rd April 1916 where he joined the 18th Battalion on 1st August 1916.

In May 1916 he was admitted to hospital with the mumps. 

James was wounded in action on 2nd September 1916 and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a bomb wound to his right thigh.  He returned to his Unit on 9th May 1917.

On 8th October 1917 he was wounded a second time receiving a severe gun shot wound to his right leg and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment.  James was awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the 8th October: 

The citation for the award reads: 'For skill and daring in handling his section during the progress of a raid on enemy trenches on 8th October at Broodseinde Ridge. Although subjected to heavy M.G. fire, he engaged the enemy with rifle fire allowing 'A' Company to raid successfully and withdraw back to their own lines. Pte Glover remained firing and protected his own party's withdrawal. He has shown great devotion and courage on several occasions in recent operations. The number participating in the raid was 2 Officers 45 other ranks.'  (Commonwealth Gazette No 76. Date: 23rd May 1918).

James was then returned to Australia in May 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 1st January 1919.
